Bonjour, guten morgen, buenos dias, buongiorno, bore da and hello! Today, the 26th of September, is the European day of languages. It is a day to celebrate the fact that through learning a language countries and cultures are brought closer together, rather than being separated by a language barrier, as is often the case, especially in Britain, where it is too often commonplace to expect other countries to learn English. Here at St James we are celebrating this day through two competitions, the first of which is a general knowledge quiz of Europe, with the prize of some rather lovely Belgian chocolates. The second competition is externally run, across Europe, aptly names the ‘LAFTAs’ (the language and film talent awards), in which you can create a short film about the importance of learning a language and compete for some fantastic prizes. It is a day to celebrate the unifying nature of learning a foreign language.
