‘Would you like your students to become more engaged in the world around them and have a better grasp of how our society and political institutions work? Our British Politics Weekend for students aged 15-18 offers just such as opportunity. The Weekend takes place on the 4th & 5th of December, at the University of London Union. This two-day course will appeal to students who enjoy the discussion of political issues and current affairs, and is ideal for those thinking of studying politics or related disciplines at university. The course is an interactive introduction to the British party politics from the campaign trail to Westminster debates.
What the students will get up to:
Lectures & Debates
Through a series of lectures, discussions and debates students will learn about the legislative process, the major political parties and their history, election campaigning at local and national level, and debates surrounding constitutional reform.
Students will take on the roles of MPs from major political parties. They will formulate a legislative programme, debate bills and react to crises and controversies. Budding politicians will gain vital skills in public speaking, campaigning, strategic planning and learn how to operate within and outside the party system.
Our tutors, all of whom are graduates of top universities, postgraduate or doctoral students, are friendly, experienced and approachable. The course is extremely interactive, and fosters important skills in critical thinking, advocacy, and logical analysis – skills that are vital across the curriculum.
The cost of the Weekend, which is inclusive of all tuition, materials and certificates, is £140 per student. The event will run from 10:30 to 16:30 on both days. Debate Chamber offers a limited number of full and partial bursaries to students who would otherwise have financial difficulty in attending. Full details are available on our website.
You can download a poster for this event to display in your school here.
Please note: this is not a residential course; accommodation must be arranged independently if required.
