Erasmus scheme to expand to non-EU countries

The majority of European universities take part in Erasmus and over 2.2 million students have participated since it started in 1987. Over 4,000 higher education institutions in 33 countries participate, and there are plans to increase both the numbers and locations of these, to include non-EU countries. The EU also wants to increase the number of participants to three million students, by 2012.
